Oncology

Immunomodulators & Myeloma Therapy

Thalidomide and its analogues. They bind cereblon and redirect a cellular ubiquitin ligase to destroy proteins the plasma cell depends on, while separately co-stimulating T and NK cells.

Medicine types
Thalidomide, lenalidomide and pomalidomide, often with a proteasome inhibitor.
How it works
Cereblon binding explains both the anti-myeloma effect and the harm in pregnancy.
Pregnancy warning
Severely damaging to a developing baby. Pregnancy must be excluded and prevented.
Good to know
Supply is controlled, with counselling required at every dispense.
