Oncology

Chemotherapy — Alkylating & Platinum Agents

Cytotoxic medicines that act on DNA itself. Alkylating agents attach alkyl groups to the bases and platinum compounds form cross-links, so the strands can no longer be copied cleanly.

Medicine types
Cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide and melphalan, with cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin.
How it works
Damages DNA directly, so a cell cannot finish dividing.
Treatment course
Given in cycles, letting marrow and gut lining recover between doses.
Good to know
Prescription-only, and almost always given under direct supervision.
